Under-resourced communities and rural America bear the brunt of a health care system that has systematically perpetuated inferior health care among marginalized populations-very young children, senior citizens, veterans and the disabled. Hear to HEAL partners with Remote Area Medical (ramusa.org), a humanitarian organization that provides mobile health services and pop-up health clinics to increase access and remediate the situation. Hear to HEAL connects people resources and links to a calendar of RAM’s free mobile health events. ramusa.org. Our advocacy efforts focus on legislation that will more easily allow licensed health professionals to obtain temporary licenses to provide charitable care in states where their help is needed most. RAM has events all over the country and takes medical, dental and vision care to the communities that need them most.

Despite advances in research and technology, millions of Americans suffer from preventable diseases and lack access to quality health care. Access to dental care remains out of reach for over 57 million Americans who live in dental professional shortage areas and over 67 million without dental insurance coverage (CDC, 2024). The public health system in America leaves many behind.

The Hear to HEAL Students Offering Support program (SOS) provides travel funds for dental students to participate in community service programs in the US and abroad. This pipeline-to-pathways program is an incubator for students to become change agents for health equity. Providing opportunities for students to experience the real-world challenges of marginalized communities exposes them to the glaring reality of health disparities. The experiences are life-changing and are designed to inspire, motivate, and support health professional students to continue providing charitable community health services after graduation.

The SOS (Students offering Support) program is designed to make a lasting impact on students to pursue and adopt a lifelong commitment to service. Hear to HEAL provides funding for students to participate in enriching experiences that will forever change their lives. These experiences will prepare them to be the dedicated, compassionate healers underserved populations need them to be. Most importantly, health professional and pre-health professional students will be trained by role models and mentors who are dedicated to serving others. They will be led by example.

Check website for schedule of mission trips offered from partnering organizations in US and abroad. Health profession Institution Administrators and Advisors will play a vital role. They will provide information about the academic calendar, dates for Spring and Summer breaks and will have input into the final selection of the students. A database of university- approved programs will be linked on our website and Calls for Applications for the SOS will be sent to health professional student organizations and their Advisors. The mission experiences will provide leadership training, clinical experiences and opportunities to participate in collaborative, coordinated patient-centered care with other health disciplines. Inter-professional collaboration will be stressed.
